Featured Destination, Gloucester

Some people think that a vacation in P-town (Provincetown) is the only gay destination in Massachussettes where one can enjoy the beach and the rainbows at the same time, but there are new gay destinations popping up all over Mass. I recently visited Gloucester, Ma on the North Shore of Massachussettes. It was a quick 45 minute drive (compared to the 2.5 hrs from Boston to Provincetown) and easy 4 lane highway most of the way. I found a great B&B owned by a gay male couple called The Inn at Babson Court. It is in a great location right in downtown near lots of gay friendly bars and restaurants.
If you are looking for more beach time, check out Good Harbor Beach on Atlantic Rd.

There lots of hotels, B&B's, and rentals. All for 1/2 the price, 1/2 the crowds, but all of the fun! For more info, check out http://www.ci.gloucester.ma.us.

National Coming Out Day

On National Coming Out Day 2005, NYU School of Medicine became the first medical school in the country to participate in a "Fine By Me" campaign. Check it out....

In 2002, Duke University had the #9 basketball team in the country, they were #11 in Men’s Lacrosse, and the had the 2nd fastest 50 yard sprinter in their division. Yet, at a school where rankings meant everything, there was only 1 list that year they were able to top: In 2002, Duke was ranked the #1 most homophobic school in the country.
When Lucas Schaefer, a senior at the time, heard the news, he feared that Duke’s new celebrity would become a self-fulfilling prophecy. “I knew that the more people thought we were homophobic, the less diverse the campus would become.” Schaefer told me during an interview from his Brooklyn apartment. “Even less gays, even more homophobia”.
One night over dinner, he was discussing the situation with his friends when they decided something had to be done. They realized something visible that students could do to show their support for the gay community would be a way to make it clear that they would not accept this ranking lying down. “We wondered if most people at Duke were really homophobic, or if that was just the perception.”
“We came up with the slogan (Gay? Fine by me.) because it was simple. People could wear it, people would know what it meant, anyone who wanted to could show their support,” Schaefer said. 10 days later, Lucas and his cohorts had given away 2,000 shirts, and people were wearing them.
In 2004, Duke University did not appear anywhere on the Princeton Review's homophobia list.
Schaefer has distributed over 25,000 shirts across the country, although not without some resistance. On April 19, Homewood-Flossmoor High School (Flossmoor, Ill.) had a FineByMe awareness day. A local church printed up its own shirts that read “Crimes Committed Against God”. The church’s shirts provoked other students to print up their own shirts with slogans such as, “Gay, burn in hell.” Similar incidents have occurred at a few other schools.
Despite drawbacks, Schaefer is optimistic about the project. “I will deem the campaign a complete success when our president wears one during a press conference,” Schaefer added. Until then, there are t-shirts to be printed.

Safer Sex

In light of the recent criticism of President Bush’s abstinence only programs, it seems that the administration needs a new approach to the sexual educations of America’s youth. Unfortunately, those in charge have failed to notice an alternative that is literally right under their noses. If the aim of these programs is to decrease teen pregnancy (which it has not), STI’s (which it has not), and decrease the overall burden to American society, then another solution exists which has stood the test of generations as a tried-and-true way to reach these goals: lesbian sex. Yes, that is correct, lesbian sex is an excellent alternative to abstinence and holds equally compelling statistics. At present, there is a 0% pregnancy rate associated with lesbian sex as well as a 95% decrease in transmission of STI’s as compared with heterosexual sex practices. The transmission of HIV between women is relatively negligible as well. If the administration would only focus its resources on teaching teenage girls how to embrace their lesbian tendencies, the results would be staggering; 5,000 fewer teen mothers every year, 10,000 fewer cases of STI’s, a 10 fold decrease in the abortion rate, and an estimated 50,000 less people on welfare. It seems that if there is a homosexual agenda, it is the salvation of American youth from the mass destruction that awaits them at their sexual maturity.
